A charity golf competition hosted by Sutton Bridge Seniors has raised more than £720 for St Barnabas Lincolnshire, bringing together players from across the region for a day of golf, food and fundraising.
The Sutton Bridge Seniors’ Invitational Better Ball Stableford competition was hosted by Sutton Bridge Seniors’ captain Tony Fox on Wednesday, August 5. The event raised £720, plus money from a bucket collection, with all funds donated to the hospice charity.
A full day of golf and fundraising
The day began with coffee and bacon rolls before competitors played the opening nine holes. Players then stopped at a halfway house serving snacks before returning to the course for a second nine holes to complete the competition.
A meal was provided after the golf and was described as being enjoyed by all. The organisers said the players had travelled from as far away as Ipswich, as well as from Peterborough, Sudbrook and Boston, highlighting the regional appeal of the annual invitational.
The seniors’ section thanked everyone who contributed to making the event a success and helping raise more than £720 for St Barnabas.
Spalding players among the winners
The competition was decided on countback, with Wally Lawes of Sutton Bridge Golf Club and Steve Sayer of Spalding Golf Club taking first place.
Andy Parks, representing Sutton Bridge Golf Club, and Dougie Robertson of Nene Park Golf Club finished second. Third place went to two Spalding Golf Club players, Vic Smith and Andrew Broughton.
There were also two nearest-the-pin prizes. Alan Worthington of Rushmore Golf Club won the prize on the second hole, while Andrew Broughton of Spalding Golf Club was nearest the pin on the sixth.
Local businesses support the event
The main competition was sponsored by Leesons Garage of Sutton Bridge. The nearest-the-pin prizes were sponsored by Space Builders of Tydd St Giles.
The fundraising event supports St Barnabas Lincolnshire, a charity providing hospice care and support across Lincolnshire. The money raised will contribute to the charity’s work, although the supplied report does not specify how the funds will be allocated.
The event concluded with a presentation involving the competition winners and captain Tony Fox. Its combination of sporting competition, sponsorship and donations gave the Sutton Bridge Seniors’ section a successful day both on and off the course.
