‘Worst junction in Spalding’: reader calls for Pinchbeck Road redesign

A Spalding resident has described the junction of Pinchbeck Road and Park Road as the town’s “worst junction” and called for a more substantial redesign instead of improvements to the existing layout.

In a letter published by The Spalding and South Holland Voice on September 9, 2026, Mr P Odell of Sherwood Drive, Spalding, said turning left from Pinchbeck Road into Park Road had “always been a nightmare”.

A call for a relief road

Mr Odell argued that a small relief road, created by cutting off the awkward corner, could have improved the turning angle. He criticised the decision to “simply tart up what’s there”, saying the approach had missed an opportunity to tackle the underlying problem.

“Is it me or was this not a fantastic opportunity to improve the junction of Pinchbeck Road and Park Road? We are all fully aware that this is the worst junction in Spalding.”

The letter also linked the junction concerns to wider frustration about major works in the area. Mr Odell referred to the “bridge to nowhere”, which he said had wasted millions of pounds, and complained that a cycle lane along Pinchbeck Road had been widened when, in his view, it did not need widening.

Roadworks and Woolram Wygate concerns

He said the cycle-lane work had caused “miserable journeys for many motorists” and described the roadworks as lengthy and apparently continuing for the foreseeable future.

The letter went on to question the closure of Woolram Wygate at the train-crossing end. Mr Odell called on the relevant authority to use “some common sense” and also mentioned weeds affecting the water taxi.

However, an editor’s note clarified that highways matters are handled by Lincolnshire County Council, rather than South Holland District Council. The letter itself had addressed its appeal to South Holland District Council.
