A Spalding lecture will examine what young people know about climate change and the knowledge they may need in the future, as the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society turns its attention to climate education and environmental resilience.

The event, titled Science, Solutions and Schools, will be held on Friday 16 October 2026 at Broad Street Methodist Church, Spalding, PE11 1TB. Doors open at 7pm and the lecture starts at 7.30pm.

Climate education and national policy

The speaker will be Andrew Charlton-Perez, head of the School of Mathematical, Computational and Physical Sciences and professor of meteorology at the University of Reading.

He will look at how national education policy has changed in recent years and consider what high-quality, universal climate education could look like. Charlton-Perez leads the national Climate Ambassador volunteering scheme, funded by the Department for Education. The scheme aims to help nurseries, schools and colleges create action plans to reduce their environmental impact and become more resilient to a changing climate.

A Fenland perspective

The lecture will also draw on Charlton-Perez’s personal experience. Described as a proud Fenman, he will reflect on growing up in the Fens with an interest in weather and climate, and explain how that background influenced his professional life.

The Spalding Gentlemen’s Society has brought members together to discuss news and discoveries since 1710. Its work over the decades has included interests in medicine, botany, optics and engineering.

Tickets cost £5 per person, while full-time students can attend free. Tickets are available on the door. Further information is available by emailing [email protected] or visiting www.sgsoc.org.
