Children in Spalding will be able to explore local history through baking, craft activities, puzzles, stories and discovery during a new series of events organised by the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society.
The programme is designed for young people who want to find out more about the past and how it has shaped life today. Sessions will combine practical activities with historical and folklore themes, giving children the opportunity to learn new skills, uncover facts and earn badges.
Fenland folklore and legends
The first History Hunters – Fenland Folklore and Legends session is scheduled for Sunday 25th October from 1.30pm. It is open to children aged five and over.
During the session, children can take a closer look at Allhallowtide, also known as All Souls’ Tide, bake soul cakes and make a punkie or Hoberdy’s lantern. The programme will also include a Fen ghost story and an introduction to local saints.
A second History Hunters event will follow on Sunday 22nd November, again from 1.30pm. This session will focus on Fenland stories and creatures, including Boggarts, Will-o’-the-wisps and Fen Tigers, with organisers planning to explore both the myth and the reality behind the latter.
Children attending the November event can make a Green Man head and design their own Fen Tiger flag patch.
Spalding half-term history event
Families can also attend The Smashing Stuarts on Tuesday 27th October. The event runs as a drop-in session between 10am and 2pm, allowing attendees to arrive during that time.
The session will examine the plague and the Great Fire of London, as well as the conflict between Roundheads and Royalists. Children will also be able to learn about inventions from the Stuart period, make their own plague mask and create sweet Marchpane to take home.
The Smashing Stuarts event is free, although donations are welcomed. History Hunters costs £3 per child.
Venue and booking information
All three events will be held at Spalding Baptist Church on Swan Street, Spalding, PE11 1BT. Parents and guardians must remain with their child during the activities.
Places can be reserved in advance, and pre-booking is encouraged for every event. Families can book through the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society website or contact the organisers by emailing [email protected] for more information.
The events are intended to make history accessible and enjoyable for children, using hands-on activities and storytelling to connect national events, local traditions and Fenland folklore.
