Pinchbeck United responded to two heavy defeats by recording their first victory of the GCE Hire United Counties League Division One season, beating Gedling Miners Welfare 1-0 at home.
The Knights had conceded seven goals in each of their previous two matches. This time, however, they kept a clean sheet and held on for three important points in a game settled by Josh Panton’s 71st-minute goal.
Panton decides close contest
Pinchbeck’s winning goal came after a Marshall Young free kick had been parried by the visiting goalkeeper. Panton reacted first, sweeping home the loose ball to give the hosts the lead.
That advantage proved enough. The Pinchbeck defence protected the one-goal margin for the rest of the match, completing a shutout that brought a significant change in fortunes after the side’s recent defensive struggles.
The result was described in the report as a deserved 1-0 win for Lewis Thorogood’s team. It was also the club’s first success of the campaign, following a run that had included two matches in which seven goals were conceded in each game.
Knights remain bottom but close to safety
Pinchbeck United remain at the bottom of the division despite the victory. After nine games, though, they are now only two points from safety, leaving the table finely balanced at the foot of the league.
The Knights have the opportunity to follow up immediately when they play Pinxton on Saturday. The report says Pinxton are the only team level with Pinchbeck on points at the bottom of the division, creating the possibility of back-to-back wins for Thorogood’s side.
Pinchbeck’s starting team was Cox, Denton, Balding, Panton, Cranfield, Huggins, Dale, Young, Waby, Hussein and Ward. The substitutes were Robbins, Melson, Callaby and King.
There were 35 people in attendance for the match.
